Context

Project period 1, integral design of a consumer product.

The assignment

The assignment was to design a sustainable wooden desk lamp for the souvenir shop of a design or art museum as a junior designer.

The lamp had to meet several requirements:

  • Mechanically adjustable in height
  • Attachable to a desk
  • User-assembled
  • Styled after a Dutch designer

The challenge was to combine functionality, manufacturability, and aesthetics within clear technical and design constraints.

The result

The result is a working wooden desk lamp with:

  • An adjustable mechanism
  • A clamp construction for attaching to the desk
  • A design inspired by a chosen Dutch designer
  • A construction that can be assembled by the user
Great report, complete, attention to sketchbook and user research as well as construction plan are above standard. APA guidelines applied

Approach & my role

The project started in a group of four, with the research phase carried out together. From chapter 4 onwards, I developed the project independently. My contribution in the group phase:

  • Working out parts of the analyses (e.g., user analysis and requirements)
  • Contributing to concept development and research directions

My individual approach (main part)

Generating and sketching multiple concepts Selecting and developing a final concept Designing the mechanism and construction Working out material choices and construction plan Building a physical model in the workshop Testing the product with users Evaluating and reflecting on the design and process I completed the entire design process: from idea to working final product.

A strong answer to the brief

This project is a strong answer to the brief because:

  • The design meets all requirements and constraints
  • Functionality (adjustability and assembly) is well integrated
  • The product was actually made and tested
  • The design is based on research and analysis
  • Able to independently complete and finalize a design process
  • Able to translate ideas into a manufacturable product
  • Able to combine technology, design, and usability
  • Able to reflect and improve my work
